After reading the article in The Maritime Executive detailing a fire aboard a ro-ro cargo ship docked at Zeebruge last week, we thought it was an opportune time to highlight the importance of EV fire safety equipment on board such vessels.

We know that fires from any source are extremely dangerous on ships and ferries, particularly since the increase in electric vehicles, and were pleased to see that the prompt response from professional firefighters delivered a successful outcome to this incident. With 60 electric cars on board the ship, this could have been a very serious event were it not for the highly skilled emergency response and equipment available to firefighting teams.

A fire on board a cargo ship or ferry can spread rapidly in the deck spaces as they are so enclosed. This makes any such fire difficult to tackle and the consequences can be fatal. Having the correct equipment to hand is, therefore, crucial.

“Since we launched the Fire Cloak™ we have supplied many UK ferry operators with a large number of fire blankets as a vital part of the fire safety equipment that emergency services have at their disposal should the worst happen,” explains Matt Butcher, sales & marketing manager for Prosol UK.

“We’re proud to play a part in ensuring the safety of both passengers and crew on ferries and ships and privileged to support the ferry companies that place such importance on providing the very highest levels of health and safety whilst at sea and in dock.”
